嵇紹是西晉時代一個忠勇愛國的人，生得身材高大，儀表軒昂雄偉。

有人曾對司徒王戎說：「昨天在人群中看到嵇紹，他那雄偉英俊的樣子，就像野鶴立在雞群里一樣。」

王戎說：「你沒有看到你的父親嵇康呢，有其父必有其子啊！」他在惠帝(司馬衷)時當侍中的官。

有一次都城發生了變亂，齊王司馬冏在這次變亂中被殺。他眼見變亂的情勢非常嚴重，就一直往皇宮狂奔。

宮門口的侍衛見有人跑，立時搭箭拉弓准備射殺；可是侍衛官蕭隆望見嵇紹的雄偉儀表，連忙從那個侍衛的弓上把正要發出的箭拔下。

不久，河間王司馬顒和成都王司馬穎會合兵力，侵犯西晉國都，這時嵇紹跟從惠帝到湯陰(在今河南省湯陰縣西南)去討伐，不幸打了敗仗。

當時許多官員和侍衛死的死，傷的傷，逃到逃；只有嵇紹一個人還是威武而恭敬地保衛著惠帝。

後來，射來的箭矢如雨般的稠密，嵇紹終于也中箭身亡。他身上流出的鮮血濺到惠帝的衣服上，事平后，有人要勸他洗掉，惠帝卻舍不得說：「這是嵇侍中的血，不要洗去。」

成語解釋

鶴站在雞群當中。

鶴：禽類鳥名，頸長，身高三、四尺，全身純白。
