唐朝大詩人李白，五歲時，隨父親遷居蜀地(四川省)。
此時的他，開始讀書識字，十歲時即能精通詩書，但是他天資聰穎，卻不甚用功。
有天，他趁父親睡覺，便溜到大街上遊玩。突然看到一位老婆婆彎腰在磨刀石上磨著一根粗的鐵杵，他好奇地問
老婆婆在幹甚麼，老婆婆告訴他要把鐵棒磨成一根針。李白嘲笑老婆婆要磨到何時才能成為細細的繡花針呢？真是滑天下之大稽，不覺得大笑起來。
「嘿，小孩兒，不要笑，只要堅忍不拔，努力不懈，鐵杵終有磨成繡花針的一天。」老婆婆如此訓誡他。
李白頓有所悟，深深向老婆婆鞠躬致歉，然後回家。
自此之後，他專心致力于學問上，終于成為中國歷史上千古頌揚的大詩人，同時，也證明了「鐵杵磨成針」的道理。
