The idiom "羅掘俱窮" (luó jué jù qióng) originated from a story during the Tang Dynasty. The story revolves around a man named Zhang Xun, who was highly skilled, courageous, and loyal to his duty.
During the rebellion led by An Lushan, Zhang Xun and Xu Yuan defended Suiyang (now Shangqiu, Henan) together with only 3,000 soldiers against a massive enemy force of over a hundred thousand. Despite the enemy's use of various brutal methods to attack the city, Zhang Xun successfully repelled them. He remained steadfast and refused to surrender.
As time went on, the city ran out of food, and the soldiers resorted to stripping tree bark and boiling waste paper to alleviate their hunger. Eventually, they even caught all the sparrows in the sky and dug up all the rats from the ground. With no means to resist, the soldiers finally succumbed to the attack of An Lushan's rebels.
At this point, Zhang Xun rejected the enemy's persuasion to surrender and boldly insulted them, which led to his immediate execution by the enemy.
The idiom "羅掘俱窮" describes a situation where a person has exhausted all possible methods to overcome difficulties and has no further recourse. It can also be used to describe a situation where financial resources have dried up despite desperate efforts to raise funds.
