  • This idiom originates from an ancient Chinese poem and describes a situation where one occupies or takes over someone else's dwelling or position. It is derived from the behavior of birds, particularly magpies and doves.

Most birds have the ability to build nests using mud and grass, but doves are an exception. Instead of building their own nests, doves rely on their physical strength to intimidate other birds and occupy their nests.

In the original context of the idiom in the "Book of Songs," it was used metaphorically to describe women of that time who lacked skills for self-sufficiency. After getting married, they would enjoy the comforts provided by their husband's family, just as doves occupy the nests of magpies without knowing how to build their own.

However, in modern times, women have become equally capable as men, so the idiom "鵲巢鳩占" is no longer applicable to describe women who enjoy pre-existing comforts after marriage.
