"曠日持久" is a Chinese idiom that means wasting a lot of time and dragging on for a long period. It describes a situation where time is being squandered and the problem persists without being resolved. The idiom originated from a story during the Warring States period in ancient China.
In the story, the King of Zhao sought help from the State of Qi to defend against an attack from the State of Yan. The State of Qi sent a renowned general named Tian Dan to serve as the overall commander of the Zhao army. However, a Zhao general named Zhao She disagreed with this decision and believed that he could lead the army to victory.
Zhao She argued that Tian Dan had no intention of fighting wholeheartedly for Zhao because he didn't want Zhao to become powerful and pose a threat to Qi. He claimed that giving Tian Dan full authority over the Zhao army would only lead to a protracted conflict, wasting the military resources of both sides and ultimately benefiting the State of Qi.
Despite Zhao She's warning, the King of Zhao ignored his advice. As predicted by Zhao She, Tian Dan did not actively engage in battle, resulting in the war dragging on for several years, consuming a significant amount of manpower and resources.
The idiom "曠日持久" is now used to describe a situation where time is wasted and a problem persists without being resolved. It implies a prolonged and fruitless endeavor.
